Introduction to IRC

Note: You can now connect to our IRC channel via the website -- See here for more info

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating with people all over the world in real-time. It consists of various separate servers, often connected to each other creating large IRC-networks.

To connect to an IRC-network, you’re required to use a client, there are several flavours available to almost any operating system currently used today. The most notorious ones are Xirc for OSX, Xchat and Klient for Windows. In this tutorial we’re not going to be looking at specific clients instead we’re going to look at the more general information required for you to successfully connect to an IRC-server and help you interact with other fans of Nuclear-Dawn community.

Below is a list of links to different vendors of IRC-clients

Xchat for Windows

Klient for Windows (commercial)

Although there are several more clients available today, most of them deliver similar functionality to those mentioned above. The most common difference is either the name or that they want your cash, but make sure to read the documentation provided by the vendor.

Once you have installed your client properly and configured it correctly it’s time to connect to an IRC-server. When you have successfully been connected to the server in question, you will be presented with a status-window. Most of the communication between users on an IRC-network is made using channels, these works in a similar fashion to chat-rooms where users are able to send messages to everyone within that room. In order to join a channel you will either make use of the inbuilt channel-browser or use the command-line in the status-window to execute the command /join #<channel>.

Once all these steps have been completed you’re free to chat with other members of the Nuclear-Dawn community.

If you already have a client installed on your system, we advice you to use the following link in order to speed up the process.

Good luck!
